Holiday Party

June 2005

WJA San Diego chapter invited WJA San Francisco Chapter member Pratimo Navsky, a certified Professional CoActive Coach and gem importer, to share her life coaching techniques with our members. The theme of the evening was Life and Career Balance. Ms. Navsky's experience in the jewelry industry makes her all the more qualified to coach jewelry professionals, and the event was well attended.

After discussing her own background and ways to think positively, she soon had the group working together on several exercises. "What is our dream career?"- without reservation each participant had to explore and share their highest hopes and dreams with one another, an exercise many had never attempted before. Then, using the handouts, members scored the various segments in their own "wheels of life" and "career satisfaction," clarifying the areas of their lives which need to be addressed.

With these exercises completed, it was then time to set goals and take steps toward working on the unsatisfactory areas and the career dreams. This was accomplished by listing at least three steps on paper, and then committing to act upon one of the steps by a certain date. With partners chosen from the group, dates were established to call and check up on each other!

In all, a revealing and stimulating evening with WJA San Diego.

The President of GIA, Bill Boyajian, spoke to our San Diego Chapter on June 22. His talk, titled "Who Said It's A Man's World? It's Certainly A
Woman's Industry," discussed the issues surrounding women in the workplace. The program was meant to challenge, inspire and direct women as they grow stronger in their careers. Giving us the man's view of the working woman, Boyajian shared his views on what can hold us back and what can help us succeed. He is a firm believer that women will be the great leaders of our industry in the future. His talk was pointed and candid. We appreciated that.

Designs by Stuart Benjamin, a jewelry store owned by two of our members, achieved AGS membership recently. It is only one of 1400 jewelers throughout the United States and Canada to have this distinction.

"They have qualified as a Registered Jeweler by having a personal desire to increase their knowledge of gemology through their AGS member store subscribing to ethical business principles set down by the Federal Trade Commission, Better Business Bureau, and the Society's own code of standards." said Bill Sites, AGS president. "Their commitment to professional excellence is an asset to the Society and to the jewelry industry as a whole." Congratulations to Stewart Benjamin and Barbara Wasserstrom!
